Information About The Job:

  

NOTE:  Work schedule for this position will be Monday through Friday 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM.  Schedule subject to change based on set-up needs.  Occasional weekends and evening hours may be required.  An essential function of this position will be to exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.  Light work usually required walking or standing to a significant degree.   

 

DUTIES:  This full-time position is located in the Science Department at Community College of Aurora and reports to the Department Chair for Science.  Primary duties and responsibilities include:  provide technical support in the selection, purchase, and maintenance of lab equipment and supplies; scheduling and preparation of all undergraduate laboratories by assembling and distributing equipment, chemicals, glassware, and other appropriate supplies; make accurate chemical solutions, microbial media, stains, and specimens; assist in trouble-shooting equipment and laboratory protocol problems.  Recruit and train all biology, chemistry, and physics work-study students; laboratory protocol modification; monitor equipment and supply inventory; assist in development of laboratory preparation sheets.  Maintain computer based inventory of chemicals in stock and current Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) of all supplies; maintain an organized, labeled shelving system to allow for easy location of supplies.  Disinfect laboratory equipment and facilities; dispose of hazardous waste, chemicals, preserved animal parts, microorganisms, and other lab materials in accordance with proper policies and procedures.  Maintain safe working environment in lab preparation areas and in teaching laboratories; assist in updating and maintaining computer technology and scientific instrumentation; maintain all necessary laboratory paperwork; ordering of supplies as needed for conducting labs.  Attend workshops, seminars and training as needed.      

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:  Two years of experience working in a science laboratory appropriate to the position as listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:   Bachelors degree in Biology, with a minor in Chemistry; 2 years community college laboratory experience; experience with laboratory equipment including:  Microscopes, spectrophotometers, balances, electrophoresis, pH meters, autoclave, thermocyclers; experience with preparation of laboratory reagents including: buffers, stock solution, and calibration standards; experience with laboratory safety procedures, molecular biology lab techniques including gel electrophoresis, PCR, and DNA sequencing; experience in laboratory protocol optimization, ordering laboratory supplies, disposal of laboratory waste, managing inventory control, sterile techniques and writing protocols for instrument usage.  Successful candidate must possess a commitment to excellence and integrity, excellent interpersonal skills, excellent written communication skills, strong customer service and interpersonal skills, ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines, excellent organizational skills, and strong time management skills.  Prior experience operating a computer.  Computer experience using Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel and Outlook).  Attention to detail.
