Full-Time, 12 Month Regular Faculty – Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)

REPORTS TO: Dean of CTE, Business, Computers and Science
SUPERVISES: May be assigned supervisory responsibilities
THE COLLEGE: The Community College of Aurora is a vibrant, growing, diverse urban community college committed to student engagement, innovative teaching and a global, multicultural perspective on learning. CCA offers over 50 degree and certificate programs that prepare 9,000 students for entry into the work force or transfer to baccalaureate-granting institutions. CCA operates on two campuses, the CentreTech campus in central Aurora and the Lowry campus on the Aurora/Denver border. The college’s student body is truly diverse with nearly half of all students identified as racial or ethnic minorities and a large and growing number of students with first languages other than English.
THE COMMUNITY: Aurora, a city of over 300,000 and the third largest in Colorado, is located just east of Denver, gateway to the beautiful Rocky Mountains. The Denver metropolitan area enjoys a high quality of life with a wide variety of cultural and recreational opportunities and excellent public schools, colleges and universities. The Southeast Denver/Aurora Corridor, home to the Community College of Aurora, boasts the region’s most diverse immigrant communities. Russian bookstores, African centers, European marts, Korean restaurants, English acquisition centers, synagogues, mosques and Orthodox churches abound.
THE POSITION: The Director/Faculty Member provides leadership and management for the new Center for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The Center provides students with learning opportunities which result in certificates and degrees related to the diverse areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Emphasis in this position is placed upon the design, implementation and growth of an innovative educational program that integrates the skills and knowledge associated with STEM related initiatives into the college offerings. The Director/Faculty Member works collaboratively with colleagues across disciplines and across the college, participates in advising, committee assignments, and other academic and institutional support activities. The Director/Faculty Member will also work on nurturing productive relationships in the business, industry, and governmental communities that support the program and create job opportunities for students. Additionally, the Director/Faculty Member will develop relationships with baccalaureate-granting institutions to foster transfer and degree completion. The Faculty Member teaches a reduced class load according to established guidelines and policies. The successful candidate for the position will be a creative academic leader with a sense of humor who works well in a collaborative, participative environment.
DIRECTOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide leadership and management for the programs administered by the Center for Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics
Pursue innovative teaching practices with a multicultural, international perspective
Develop innovative instructional programs that recognize and address STEM related initiatives
Develop new STEM related certificate and degree programs
Develop partnerships with business, community partners, and employers to solicit their input and assistance in creating educational and workforce opportunities
Develop partnerships with colleges and universities to promote transfer and completion of baccalaureate degrees
Collaborate with the college’s high school recruitment and enrollment operations to foster new student enrollment in the Center’s programs
Pursue alternative sources of funding through grants and contributions
Coordinate with the Director of Communications to develop promotional and informational materials
Recruit, evaluate and supervise part-time faculty
FACULTY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Develop and implement curriculum for classes and programs that meet student and community needs
Maintain accurate and timely records of student performance in classes
Advise students
Contribute to the processes of instructional planning, budgeting, assessment and curriculum review
Pursue continued professional improvement both in subject matter and instructional methods
Create or renew high school, community college and baccalaureate articulation agreements
Support student activities
Serve on committees
Participate in in-service programs and professional development activities
Attend meetings called by the President, Vice president of Instruction and/or Dean of CTE, Science, and Business
Assist the Dean of CTE, Science, and Business and/or Vice President of Instruction with other activities as assigned
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduate degree in a field related to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
Demonstrated skills in management and leadership
Teaching experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two years Community College teaching experience
Experience in a multi-cultural environment
Interest/experience in globalizing the curriculum and/or international experience
Professional experience in relation to science, technology, engineering, or mathematics
Ph.D. in a related field
CONTRACT SPECIFICS & SALARY RANGE: Regular 12-month faculty contract with reduced teaching load for director duties. Salary is commensurate with education and experience and in accordance with the 2007-2008 Administrative Salary Schedule. Salary range is mid $40s to low $60s per year. CCA offers a competitive fringe benefit program including health, dental and life insurance. Leave benefits and holidays are also included.
ANTICIPATED START DATE: The successful candidate could begin immediately. The latest start date would be June 1, 2008.
