My Bright Yellow, Inflatable Raft

My feet begin to go numb

as I sit cross-legged in the middle of

my bright yellow, inflatable raft.

I slowly scan the horizon.

Dark blue water surrounds me for

miles                 and                   miles.

I drift along

not really sure if I’m actually moving or

standing still.

Tiny waves splash against my raft.

I bobble up and down

over the bigger waves.

The water and sky touch

all around me,

leaving no room for a ship

or an island

to pass through.

Some seagulls begin to scream above me.

I stare at them,

I give them the

“deadly eye.”

They don’t notice and continue circling above.

(I know they want to eat me.)

I can’t take it!!

I take a deep breath and let it all out in a

scream.

I scream until my lungs give out

leaving me panting and my throat raw.

The stupid birds don’t even notice.

I lean back in my bright yellow, inflatable raft.

After a nice nap, I awaken to a sun

dressed in grey clouds.

A noise makes me sit up.

I jerk around quickly.

Am I imagining it?

It wasn’t that long ago

When I used that giant fish

with a sharp fin on his back

as a

therapist.

He kept circling me

so I figured

he wanted to

chat.

What seemed like centuries later,

a giant cruise ship had come closer

to me.

It had many passengers enjoying adult beverages

on its many balconies.

I began waving like mad at the nicely dressed,

rich people.

A few take notice,

others turn away.

The few who look at me

deliver a beauty queen wave.

Elbow Elbow

Wrist Wrist.

They continue to wave

as the boat passes me by.

As they get farther away, my waving

turns to slow beauty queen waves, too.

They grow so tiny, but I

keep waving with

tears leaving small trails down my

sunburnt cheeks.
