Ode to Generalized Anxiety Disorder 

It’s the most common psychological disorder

            In the United States today

Generalized Anxiety Disorder

            We panic over nothing

Or so they tell us.

            Nothing? They say.

What about global warming?

            The average temperature went up .04 degrees

The Department of National Security

            Raised the terror warning color to orange

The weather channel says

            A monster tornado “could happen tomorrow”

They say there aren’t enough jobs to go around

            And the unemployment rate is high

Mexicans are being deported by the hundreds

            Who’s going to do their jobs?

Women get paid ten thousand dollars per year less

            For doing the same task as a man

With less experience in the business

            Cost of living is so high

A parent can’t stay home to raise their own kids

            They hope daycare does a good job

And that they won’t miss any first words

            Americans are the fattest people in the world

Obesity is neck and neck with smoking

            For self induced terminal illness

But it’s twenty-nine cent hamburger week at McDonalds.

            And we get Generalized Anxiety Disorder

Over nothing they say?
