Construction begins on second simulation environment
August 2006

Construction began this month on the second of four anticipated simulation environments at the EMS Program.  This second simulation room will have an outdoor theme, including store front facades, a sidewalk cafe, a street and sidewalks.  As with the first ground-breaking simulation environment at CCA, this area will have a fully-functional ambulance box, a clinic/ED room, plus the ability to record audio and video in the room.  Working closely with the film and video program at CCA, the environment will essentially be a Hollywood-type film set.  The room should be ready for use by the middle of September.

EMS Program has successful debut at annual State EMS conference
October 2005

The 2005 Colorado State EMS Conference saw the CCA EMS Program host a booth in the vendors' area, as well as present an overview of their current research study in a breakout session.  The booth in the vendor hall had a steady flow of traffic around it, with many participants to the conference playing a form of EMS Jeopardy for a chance to win prizes.  Feedback from those who visited the booth was very positive, with several people saying that the CCA EMS booth was the best one in the hall.

Bob Matoba, EMS Program Department Chair, gave a one-hour presentation that gave a history of the program's Simulation Studio, as well as an overview of the first part of the research being done in the Program.

Initial Research Study Completed.
June 2005

The CCA EMS program has completed the first portion of a research project to study the effect of how psychomotor skills are taught.  With the help of Christine Moroye-McConnell and Martin Tombari, researchers from the University of Denver, the study was begun in January 2005.  This will be a multi-year study, and will eventually assess skill retention of students from our program as they progress to the field.  Read the results of the study.

First-of-its-kind Simulation Studio Completed!
January 2005

After several years of planning and fund-raising, the CCA EMS Program is proud to announce the opening of its first simulation studio.  This unique training environment is the first of at least three similar training areas to be built by the program over the next few years.

This first studio is essentially the inside of a typical home, including a front door, living room, dining room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom.  The entire area is fully furnished and functional.

At one end of the same room is an emergency department receiving room that also doubles as a doctor's office exam room, depending on the scenario being run.  On the other end of the room is a fully functional ambulance box.

Each area of the simulation studio is wired for audio and video recording by instructors. After the 'call' is completed the students will review the tapes and critique their performance.

EMS Program Gains Accreditation!
April 2004

CCA's EMS program has been granted national accreditation by the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Along with the recognition from CAAHEP comes official recognition of EMS training center status by the Prehospital Care Program of the Colorado Department of Health.

Accreditation and recognition by both agencies means that the CCA EMS program has met or exceeded strict standards of performance used in judging the efficiency of programs that train emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
