The Community College of Aurora Foundation (CCAF) has named former First Lady of Colorado, Frances Owens, as Honorary Event Chair for its third annual CCAF Scholarship Recognition Luncheon.

Owens will speak at the luncheon on April 24 at the Marriott Denver Tech Center (4900 S. Syracuse Street, Denver, 80237)

“I value and respect the important work performed by community colleges in providing educational access to all who seek it,” said Owens. “The Community College of Aurora has quietly been changing lives for students in the eastern metro area for the past two decades. I hope everyone will join me in enabling CCA to continue to provide opportunities by supporting the 2008 Scholarship Recognition Luncheon.”

Approximately 400 people attended last year’s luncheon, which honored more than 40 donors who have funded over $160,000 in scholarships for CCA students during the prior year. Metro-area philanthropist Janet Elway served as Honorary Event Chair in 2007.

The title sponsor for this year’s luncheon for the second consecutive year is Centennial-based Brakes Plus.

Since 2000, CCA students have been awarded more than $900,000 in scholarships through the CCA Foundation. For more information, tickets or sponsorship information for this year’s luncheon, contact Diana Whye, Community College of Aurora Foundation at (303) 360-4833.

Janet Elway at the 2nd annual
Scholarship Recognition Luncheon

The Community College of Aurora Foundation (CCAF) Scholarship Recognition Luncheon was held April 26 at the Hyatt Regency DTC. Denver philanthropist Janet Elway was honorary chair of this year's event, which recognized CCA Foundation scholarship donors and recipients. Elway emphasized the importance of community and paying-it-forward to provide educational opportunities for people who may not otherwise have the chance to go to college.

Ed Greene, CBS4 Meteorologist, served as Master of Ceremonies. Bob LeGare, scholarship donor and CCA alumnus, and Lauren Johnson, United Way Workplace Educational Scholarship Assistance Recipient, were speakers.

LeGare who attended CCA, shared his story about receiving a better education for a successful career at CCA than he had previously received at a 4-year institution. Johnson also shared her story, a single mother who enrolled at CCA to build a better life for herself and her sons. Johnson graduates this spring and has been accepted at the University of Colorado Health Science Center School of Pharmacology.

Over 300 people attended the luncheon including other scholarship recipients and their families, the Honorable Mayor Ed Tauer, Aurora City Council Members, Aurora business and community leaders, representatives from Aurora Public Schools and Cherry Creek Schools, and CCA faculty and staff. Maestas and Elway (Right)

Elway, a metro-area philanthropist who will speak at the luncheon, agreed to serve as Honorary Chair because of her role as a parent and appreciation for the “importance of education in providing access to the American dream.”

CCA Foundation scholarship recipient Heather Maestas, a single mother with two daughters, shared her story at the reception.

“I’m so proud to be setting an example for my daughters, and they’re excited that mommy gets to go to school, too.”
-Heather
Maestas
Maestas briefly attended CCA before separating from her husband. She returned to CCA several years later and is moving swiftly toward finishing an associate’s degree, with aspirations of earning more advanced degrees. She appreciates the flexible schedule at CCA that allows her to remain closely involved with her daughters’ lives. She will join other CCA scholarship recipients who will be honored at the April 26th luncheon for their personal accomplishments with regard to education, as well as the donors who made the scholarships possible.
