The Position:   Located near the beautiful Rocky Mountains of the front range of Colorado, the Community College of Aurora resides in one of the fastest growing suburbs of the Denver metropolitan area. The college is a progressive, dynamic, culturally diverse institution experiencing rapid growth, but with a strong commitment to high quality education and student success. Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage the Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeal process which measures a student's performance in cumulative completion rate, cumulative grade point average (GPA), and maximum time frame.  The Counselor is responsibile for ensuring that all students applying for or receiving federal, state of Colorado, or designated institutional financial aid funds, are meeting these standards. 
  • Manage the Petition for Dependency Override Appeal and Financial Aid Professional Judgment Appeal process. 
  • Determine eligibility and authorize awards from federal, state, institutional and private programs in compliance with all rules, regulations and guidelines.  Utilize existing funds to maximize number of students receiving assistance.
  • Review student financial aid application information for accuracy; review and verify student financial aid records for completeness and compliance to regulations, rules and guidelines; determine if additional documentation is necessary and notify applicants of their status; apply guidelines in preparing student records for awarding and/or modification of awards.
  • Provide information, advise and counsel individuals and groups, including prospective and current students, parents, faculty, staff and other professionals in the financial aid community about available programs, application procedures, eligibility requirements and student rights and responsibilities.
  • Revise awards as individual circumstances change. 
  • Assist in other areas of financial aid office as assigned.

In order to perform the essential functions of this position, the individual must possess the ability to effectively communicate, concentrate, analyze data, pay attention to detail, retain learned knowledge, instruct/teach demonstrate strong organizational skills and demonstrate strong interpersonal skills.  

Minimum Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Effective oral and written communication skills. 
  • Working knowledge with Banner or similar system.
  • Financial Aid packaging experience.
 Preferred Qualifications:
  • Minimum one year experience in a financial aid office and/or in higher education.
  • Experience in Satisfactory Academic Progress Appeals and Professional Judgment Appeals.
  • Demonstrated ability in multi-tasking and time management.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Commitment to customer service, higher education and working with students. 
Salary:   This is a full-time, 12-month appointment.
