The course map above shows a hierarchical view of all the courses currently offered by the math department. The dark red lines on the map show a "path" of prerequisite courses from MAT 030 at the bottom (which requires an appropriate score on the Accuplacer assessment test) to every course the department offers.
Use of the course map is quite easy. First, find on the map the name of the last math course you have taken, or if you have not taken any math courses yet, locate the course that your Accuplacer assessment test qualified you to take.
Then, once you have located your "level" on the map, you can follow the lines upward from that course to whatever other course or courses you wish to take. Any courses you pass through along the way while tracing your route on the map will be required prerequisite courses that must also be taken. If your last course has no upward branches, then follow the tree back down one level and start from there. For example, if your last math course was MAT 120, you would follow the tree back down to MAT 106 and continue from that point.
To illustrate the map's use, let us assume that you are a new student who has just taken the Accuplacer exam and tested in at the MAT 060 (Pre-Algebra) level. This means that the first course you must take will be MAT 060. If your goal is to take MAT 121 (College Algebra), then all you need to do is follow the shortest route on the map between MAT 060 and MAT 121. Any courses your route passes through along the way are prerequisite courses to MAT 121 and must also be taken. In this example, you would first take MAT 060, then, following your route upwards on the map, you would have to take MAT 090, MAT 106 (along with the co-requisite Mat 111) before arriving at MAT 121, which is your target course.
If your goal is to take MAT 125 (Survey of Calculus), you could follow the same route as listed above, with the addition of MAT 121, or you could take MAT 090, MAT 106 and MAT 123, which would also allow you to then take MAT 125. The same principle applies to any course on the map.
