Facilities Master Plan - Centre TeCh Campus
The Community College of Aurora’s Centre Tech campus was built in 1991. The 32 acre parcel of land for the campus was provided by the City of Aurora. Construction of the campus was funded by proceeds from revenue bonds issued by the CCA Foundation. Currently the college rents the three original buildings at Centre Tech from the Foundation, and these rent payments are used by the Foundation to pay the annual bond principal and interest due. Under the current financing arrangement, the bonds will be paid completely in the year 2015.
Two major construction projects have been completed since the original campus was constructed. A new student center building was completed in 2001, and a new addition to the Fine Arts building was completed in 2002. These two projects were the result of capital requests supported by a 1993 program plan for the Centre Tech campus.
a. Main CampusIn 1991, a main campus was constructed at 16000 E. Centre Tech Parkway consisting of three buildings: Classroom building, Administration building and Fine Arts building. The campus was constructed using funds provided by a bond issue. At the time that the main campus was built, the college made two important decisions with regard to facilities. First, it was decided that in order to save space, the college would use the Aurora public library as its primary library rather than allocate space for a library on the main campus. Second, it was decided that for vocational programs, the college would partner with T.H. Pickens Technical Center. T.H. Pickens is operated by Aurora Public Schools. The center houses a number of vocational programs offered by the school district for secondary and post-secondary students.
In May 1997, the college received approval for funding of a new student center building on the main campus. The project was funded approximately 50% with state capital construction funds and 50% by a bond issue secured by student fees. The project, which added 12,400 sq feet of student space and 14,108 of classroom, lab and faculty office space, was completed in July 2001. The student center was the CCA’s first state-funded construction project.
In May 1998, the college received approval for funding totaling $4.4 million for an 8,000 sq ft addition to the Forum building at Centre Tech. The project included construction of a new black box theatre, a new music classroom and several faculty offices. This project was recently completed in August, 2002.
OTHER CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS In May 1997, the college received approval for state capital construction funding totaling approximately $1.7 million to remodel the science labs at the Lowry campus. The project was completed in the spring of 2001.
