Community Colleges and Nanotechnology”  This workshop crosses over into many other areas presented because CC’s are in a unique position in the educational hierarchy and are custodians of many vocational and workforce development programs.  An introduction will be followed by a brainstorming session and summary of the ideas presented. 

 

*        Can community colleges teach nanotechnology?

*        What role do CC’s have in the field?

*        Do we need to re-reinvent the model?

*         “The New Covenant”

*        Will the state get in the way?

*        What is needed for CC’s to be a pivotal and real player in emerging technologies?

Dr. Mary Ann Roe, E-Portal Coordinator, Colorado Department of Labor and Employment  - “The e-Colorado Learning Portal”  The e-Colorado Learning Portal is a gateway to workforce development tools, information and resources for workforce development professionals, businesses, and job seekers.  This workshop provides awareness about access and use of e-Colorado.

 Denise Brown, Executive Director, Colorado BioScience Association – “Industry Workforce Needs” 

Mark A. Baisley, Senior Manager, Raytheon – “Effective Workforce Utilization” 

Nancy Jackson, Director of Workplace Solutions, and Robert Fulcomer, Dean, Computers, Math, Business & Accounting, Community College of Aurora  – “Addressing Training Needs of the Future”  Based on the previous day’s sessions on training needs, this workshop will address ways that training needs can be met.  The participants will discuss where we are now and what we need to develop to meet the needs of the future job market.  The focus will be on existing and new degrees, credit courses, certifications and rapid response training.  Discussion will include developing new workers as well as upgrading skills of current employees.

Christine Shepard, Director of Bioscience and Emerging Technologies Initiative, Office of Economic Development and International Trade – “Colorado State Initiatives” 

Gary R Horvath, PRA, Business Research Division, University of Colorado at Boulder – “The Business of Science and Technology”

Dr. Louis Hornyak, Executive Director, Colorado Nanotech, Inc. - “K-12 Technical Education Issues”  Do we have a problem with student interest in the sciences and engineering?  what is the scope of that problem - local? just Colorado? just the US?  the west?  PRESENTATIONS by two students (Lakewood and Conifer HS's).  How do we promote student interest and when do we have to start (elementary school?)  Can we form science clubs at the schools (a simple method to promote emerging sciences).  How do we deal with the CSAP's? Do we need to get more students to visit university, industry and national labs?   Assemble a plan of action report.
