AURORA—Trained volunteers at the Community College of Aurora once again will
prepare and e-file taxes free of charge for eligible individuals and families on
behalf of Tax Help Colorado, a program of the Denver-based Piton Foundation.
Tax Help Colorado at CCA kicks off this Saturday, Jan. 30. The service, which is
quick and confidential, will be offered Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. until
March 20 and Mondays and Wednesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. until March 17 in Room 113,
Bldg. 903, 710 Alton Way, on the Lowry campus.
Families receiving the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) or who earn less than
$49,000 a year are eligible to have their taxes prepared and filed
electronically for free through the program, saving hundreds of dollars they
might otherwise pay to standard tax accountants.
Tax Help Colorado volunteers include CCA students who have completed a series of
accounting courses that teach them income tax preparation and how to run tax
sites. These courses are accredited and certified by the Internal Revenue
Service. As participants in the Tax Help Colorado program, CCA volunteers last
year prepared and e-filed taxes for 556 families and individuals that realized a
total amount refunded of $1,004,361—the first time a Tax Help Colorado site
broke the $1 million mark.
People using the service are asked to bring the following documents when filing
through Tax Help Colorado: All W-2 and 1099 statements; information on any other
income; Social Security cards for all family members; information for all
deductions such as child care and student loans; and a copy of last year’s tax
return, if available.
