Transcription of Art Department Web Video

Introduction (Man with Glasses):  And your question was “What is Art ? “ laughs

Singer:  Art.. I think to myself is a complete mystery to myself (saxophone playing) some impossibility without a name, some uncontrolled controller in itself. (saxophone playing)In and out. (saxophone playing)Out of nowhere, now here, out of nowhere, now here. Happened just happened, overnight you see. Something, I’ve got, something beyond, a little overnight. Just happened, happened just now. (saxophone playing) It’s all about facts, and puzzles, and all the books, the displays, and all the money, and all of god’s Gemini.  Sunrise. Raw sun. Raw sun yeah. (Saxophone playing)

First Speaker (with glasses) Umm, art basically first and foremost is I think communication. And I think in large part  it’s uh communicating what we find significant in life. I think the arts can open up a whole vista for people that might not initially consider themselves artistic. But the arts can do that. They can show you a whole nother world at a deeper level. And we do have a lot of students that do decide to go on. But um, I think it’s good to um, and I think and we try and get this across, that most people are much more creative than they think they are.

Woman (brown hair, red shirt):  Art, Art is a number of things. Art is expressing yourself through a base, through a certain skill uh whether it be 2d or 3 dimensional art. Uh, working with clay or drawing, doing different, using different drawing media such us um charcoal, and ink or even going into painting.  Um yeah, you don’t have to be um, you don’t have to have any art skills to take an art course here. Um that’s what , that’s what beginning classes are for, to introduce students to the basic skills of visual arts.

Man With Moustache (William Painter) : Art can be anything from um you know the scribbles that uh, you do in kindergarten that you mom hangs up on the refrigerator door and all the way up to uh what people consider to be a Davinci masterpiece, that kind of thing. People don’t recognize that art is all around us throughout the world even you know the, the chair that you are sitting on was designed by an artist. So it’s everywhere.

Next speaker (showing person painting).  (Speaker: Rick Autenrieth):  I know a lot of people who are very bright and uh have many ideas but they uh aren’t able to express themselves in the way that they would like to. I and I think that learning how to do that visually can be a big plus and and help them get out these ideas that they have.

Lady (Sue Gibbons): We have a good variety of students here at the college. We have students coming straight out of high school and even people who are returning back to school and even retirees who are wanting to just expand their (breath) their horizons and taking an art class helps them do that. I believe every student has the ability to create and to tap back into that. I think finding, I find it very exciting and if the students can realize that they’ve  had it in them the whole time that it’s just laid dormant and now they’re awakening it um, that would bring a lot of uh excitement to the class.

Next Speaker (Brown hair, red shirt): Whether the student is in um the science lab or if they’re in a math major and um or early childhood education, any type of art will enrich uh their performance uh with their colleagues, and their surroundings and with their students.

Singer: (Saxophone playing). Music, supreme, love music. (Saxophone playing)Art is coming out live.
