Student Information
General Information:
The honors program at CCA is designed to further challenge students interested in demonstrating above average
performance in their college-level courses.
The honors program is implemented on a class-by-class basis; the student is responsible for contacting the
instructor of each course that the student would like to take for honors. A Letter of Intent form is completed
by the student and approved by the instructor. Once the class is completed successfully, the student will
receive an honors notation on his/her transcripts for each class that was completed with honors.
In addition to the honors notation for each class taken for honors credit, the student may also receive a
designation—magna cum laude, summa cum laude or cum laude, based on the student’s cumulative GPA at the point
of graduation.
Student Eligibility for the Honors Program:
- The student must maintain a 3.5 cumulative GPA
- The student must be enrolled in a transferable or degree-related class
for the honors designation to be applicable for the class
Frequently Asked Questions:
Q: How do I apply for honors credit for a specific course?
A: In order to apply for honors credit for a course, the student must meet the
eligibility requirements. Next, the student must complete the Letter of Intent
form and provide the form to the instructor for approval.
Q: What kind of course work needs to be completed to earn honors credit?
A: The student should consult the instructor if the student is interested in taking a class for
honors credit. Instructors have department-specific projects that can be used for honors credit. The
instructor and the student may also devise a suitable honors project based on specific student interests.
Instructors must approve the project description included with the Letter of Intent. The project description
may be supplied by the instructor or the student, but final approval of the project by the instructor is
required.
Q: Can any course be taken for honors credit?
A: Only transferrable or degree-related courses (100 level or above) can be taken for honors
credit.
Q: Is there a deadline for applying to a class for honors credit?
A: Students must have their Letter of Intent and project description approved by the instructor for
which they have applied for a class for honors credit by the withdraw date for the class. Students who do not
complete a Letter of Intent and project description by the census date for the class will not be eligible for
honors credit.
Q: If I apply for honors credit for a course, do I still have to complete the
regular assignments for the course?
A: In most cases, the student’s project description for honors credit in a course is in addition to
the course’s regular assignments. However, in some cases, the instructor may approve a project description
that satisfies some of the course’s regular assignments.*
*Project descriptions that include a class’ regular assignments must be approved by the instructor and the
honors committee.
Q: What happens if I don’t complete my honors project to the instructor’s
satisfaction?
A: If the project is not completed to the instructor’s satisfaction, the course will not receive
the honors designation, and the regular course work is applied toward the student’s final grade. If the honors
project included some of the regular course work, failure to complete the honors project could result in
failing the course.
Q: What’s the benefit of enrolling in a class for honors?
A: Completing a course with honors is an asset to a student’s transcripts. Not only will a
successful honor student receive an honors designation, but individual classes taken for honors credit will be
listed on the student’s transcripts. The individual honors designation for specific courses provides
recognition that will benefit the student when transferring to other institutions, seeking scholarships and
pursuing career goals.
Instructor Information
The instructor is responsible for the following duties for each student that is
approved for honors course work:
- Assisting and approving the student’s honors project (Department
Chairs are available to assist the instructor with suitable honors
projects) - Guiding the student’s honors course work during the semester and
grading all assignments proposed as part of the student’s honors
project - Notifying the Chair of the honors program via email of each student’s
successful completion of honors course work (student’s name, student
number and course prefix, number and section required in email)
Compensation:
The instructor is compensated $50 for each honors student per semester
($250 limit per semester). The instructor receives compensation for each
honors student regardless of the student’s success with his/her honors course
work. If, however, the student completes a Letter of Intent that is approved
by the instructor and that student does not submit his/her honors course
work to the instructor, the instructor is not eligible to be compensated for
that student’s honors course work assessment.
The instructor is compensated for the instruction of honors students at the
end of the semester during which the student submitted honors course work
for assessment. The instructor must complete a compensation form that
includes the name of each student who received honors instruction and
submit the compensation form to their Department Chair for approval.
Questions or concerns regarding honors students should be addressed with
the instructor’s Department Chair or a member of the Honors Committee
(contact information located above).
Department Chair Information
The Department Chair is responsible for the following duties:
- Maintaining guidelines or specific projects for honors course work
that can be supplied to instructors within the department - Approving honors projects submitted by students and instructors
- Approving compensation forms submitted by instructors at the
completion of a semester during which an instructor provided honors
course work instruction
Honors Program Chair Information
The Chair of the Honors Program is responsible for the following duties:
- Assisting instructors or Department Chairs with procedural
information or questions regarding the honors program - Receiving instructor emails notifying the Honors Chair of students’
successful completion of honors projects and notifying the appropriate
administrator of each student’s successful completion of an honors
course so that an honors designation is added to the student’s
transcripts - Maintaining an honors committee, which is responsible for the
following duties:- Review each student’s completed honors project
- Assist instructors and Department Chairs with questions or
concerns regarding a student’s honors project - Maintain a record of each student’s Letter of Intent and
