Biographic Sketch
Dr. Linda Loreyce Holderness Bradford
Working Copy

by Nneka R. H. Bradford, Daughter

I.

….was born at home December 14, 1944 in Fulton Kentucky; third of four daughters (LaWanda, Sandra, Linda and Debra) to Dorothy and Gus Holderness, a nurse and a dining car waiter;  who in 1947 moved his family to Chicago, Illinois at the request of the railroad.

II.

Chicago public schools provided a pleasant but uneventful primary and secondary education. She was a good but not spectacular student who graduated early (3 ½ years) and was voted cutest girl in her graduating class. Though she generally showed no interest in extra-curricular activities she ran but did not win the position of class vice president for her senior graduating class.

III

Accepted by all of her chosen colleges, she selected Lane College in Jackson TN, was a solid student and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Especially her pledging of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., however, after a year and a half at Lane, she became homesick and returned home to Chicago. While in Chicago she attended Olive Harvey Junior College, received her AA degree with Honors; and met and two years later, in 1967 married a handsome and enterprising young man, Calvin Bradford. 1967 was also the year she was hired by United Airlines, an opportunity for world travel and experience that factored into the development of the exceptional woman she is today.

IV

Calvin and Linda moved from Chicago to Denver in 1974, raised a wonderful nephew, Phillip, and added two magnificent children a son Howard and a daughter Nneka to their family.  One of the highlights of their young marriage was Calvin’s call to move from a management position at Samsonite Corp to the position of Vice President of Human Resources for Celestial Seasonings Tea Company in Boulder CO.  His acceptance of this promotion later positioned him to become an owner of the company when the company’s president and six vice presidents purchased the company to avoid a hostile take-over by Lipton Tea.

V

Over the years Linda was often a stay-at-home-mom with a full schedule of classes and community service.  In 1974 she completed a Bachelor’s degree, Magna Cum Laude, in psychology at Metropolitan State College (Denver CO) and in 1975 completed a Masters degree, Magna Cum Laude, in psychology from the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley CO), just three quarters after she began her graduate work. Her terminal project was on Black Psychology and she was immediately hired as a part time instructor by the UNC Black Studies Department.

VI

When the children reached school age she added additional work hours and taught part and fulltime at: UNC, MSC, CCD, DTC, CCA, CCCO AND RRCC. She was recruited by UNC as a Patricia Roberts Harris Fellow and in 1999 completed her PhD in College Student Personnel Administration. A summary of her work follows.

VII

Cal has now retired from his career and is enjoying post- retirement work. Son Howard lives in Hawaii. He is a career Army man, who with his wife Jody, has given the family two adorable grandchildren, Chantel 11 and Xavier 7.  Daughter Nneka graduated from Hampton University (Hampton, VA) in 2002 with a degree in Finance; and now lives in NY and works as a Financial Projects Manager for a Wall Street firm.

“What we call a beginning is often the end and to make an end
is to make a beginning….The end is from where we start. “

T.S. Elliot

VIII

Linda’s retirement plans are to move to her birthtown, Fulton KY (population 2,400), continue to teach online part time, pursue a certificate in web design at the local university, volunteer at the local library and developing museum, travel and spend more time with her grandchildren in Hawaii and daughter in New York.
