When and Why One Should See a Psychologist

One might benefit from seeing a psychologist for a number of reasons, most having to do with dissatisfaction or unhappiness with some aspect of one's life situation, emotional or physical state, or behavior and when one is in danger of hurting themselves or others, or losing touch with reality.

At one time or another, everyone wonders if they should see a psychologist and it's likely, at one time or another everyone probably should. Making the decision to see one and wading through the uncharted process of actually doing it can, however, be intimidating and daunting.

Often, a personal introduction to a local practice can be helpful to the process, so I called Dr. Julie Hideg and asked her to tell us about the Psychological Associates of Paducah.  Her reply follows...

In our program psychological treatment varies with the client, the problem, and  the family.  Treatment will be tailored to suit the needs and the personality of the individual.  Most treatment occurs through a series of meetings through which a problem is clarified, and potential causes are explored.  Treatment goals are then established in order to clarify needs and expectations of treatment.  Therapy appointments are usually on a weekly basis and require motivation on behalf of the client in order to meet goals.  Homework specifically designed to meet the needs of the client are part of treatment to facilitate movement to the desired outcome.  At Psychological Associates of Paducah, Inc., we offer individual, family and collateral (parents only) sessions depending on the presenting problem and needs of the client.  Psychological Associates of Paducah offers services to young children, adolescents, and adults.

It is typical for a therapist to focus on feelings, thoughts, and behaviors to help treat individual and family problems of daily living.  When an individual is having difficulty maintaining employment or relationships, it may be helpful to seek counseling.  If daily functioning is affected or if one is having more difficulty completing tasks throughout the day, counseling may be necessary.  Families may seek treatment during times of adjustment, such as divorce or children leaving the home.  There are many reasons why someone might contact Psychological Associates of Paducah for psychological testing, individual or family counseling, or group therapy.  Issues that can be addressed in counseling include suicidal thinking, ADHD, depression, anxiety, oppositional behaviors, adjustment difficulties, learning problems, social problems, stress, fears, nightmares, sleep disturbances, tantrums, low self-esteem, traumatic experiences, sexual problems, relationship difficulties, grief and loss, and anger.
