Career Opportunities with a
Major in Computer Engineering
Engineering is the art of
applying science to create things that benefit people. Approximately two million engineers work in the United
States. Electrical and Computer Engineering are those branches of engineering that involve making things that
use electricity, specifically, the field covers hardware, software, and the interaction between them. Computer
engineers may be involved in the development of microprocessors, computers, workstations, the servers and
switches that support the internet, and in the implementation of the hardware and protocols that support the
telecommunications network. Computer Engineers design and implement real-time operating systems and software
tools for designing integrated circuits. Computer engineers are also responsible for the realization of
microprocessor chips that control computers and other electronic hardware.
Computer engineering students develop a solid foundation in math and physics. Students achieve advanced and
in-depth understanding in a number of technical areas; develop proficiency in critical workplace skills;
obtain hands-on experience in laboratory experimentation and data analysis; and use a broad range of software
tools for analysis and design.
