Did you know that the Community College of Aurora provides military and veterans services for new and current students?
For nine years, Judy Steele has worked in Military and Veteran Services at CCA and has helped thousands of current-serving military and veterans with finding resources, enrolling in CCA, and using military tuition assistance and VA education benefits.
Many veterans go through the military transition assistance program as they leave the military but may not recall what they were told, Steele said.
“Most people don’t know what benefits they qualify for once they have been out for a few years,” Steele said. “I walk students through what they might qualify for and the process.”
In her role, Steele advises military and veteran students about the various tuition programs that are available to them, such as the Post 9/11 GI Bill, Montgomery GI Bill – Active Duty, and the Dependents’ Educational Assistance program.
CCA also works with community resources to let military and veteran students know about opportunities in the community. For example, CCA works with the University of Colorado Heroes Clinic, which provides free dental services to student veterans who qualify.
Additionally, on the third Tuesday of each month, Emma Armstrong, community employment coordinator with Veterans Affairs, comes to CCA’s CentreTech campus from 9 to 11 a.m. to inform veterans about employment resources, tell them about employers looking to hire veterans and connect them with other local resources.
The Community College of Aurora is celebrating Veterans Day on November 11 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with a special event in the Forum (F100) in the Fine Arts Building. Anyone is welcome at this event which will feature food, information and resources, films, and more.
Steele is always looking for more resources for military and veteran students both internally and externally — she is currently working with students to start a military and veterans student organization.
Current military or veterans interested in finding out more about what CCA offers can review the college’s Military and Veterans Basic Training Handbook.
