Prior Learning Assessment Military or Work-based Training

A number of national organizations have developed guides to help prospective students (and colleges) match previous military or work-based training with college courses and PLA credit opportunities.

Military Service Members and Veterans

Credit for knowledge and skills gained in the U.S. Military is generally recognized based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide as documented on a Joint Service Transcript (JST) for current or former Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, or Navy personnel. For Air Force personnel, credits from the Community College of the Air Force transcript (CCAF) will be transferred directly for courses shown on a CCAF transcript.

Military training classified by ACE in the vocational category is not considered college level and will not directly translate into college credit. If you wish to have military training in the vocational category considered for college credit, you may use the portfolio review or challenge exam options described in other sections.

Active service members or veterans may request a copy of their Joint Service Transcript on the Department of Defense website. The JST eliminates the need for the DD Form 295.

Non-Military Students

Students with previous work-based training who are not active military or a veteran may review the standard American Council on Education (ACE) guide, the National College Credit Recommendations Service, and the CCA PLA Credit Crosswalk to determine which, if any, of their previous work-based training has been mapped to college credit.

Once you have identified your PLA options, please complete the CCA PLA Request form and submit your completed form via mail or in person to the CCA Credentials Evaluator at the address below. You must also request that the agency issuing your required support documentation send those items directly to that same office at:
