OER Incentives
Community College of Aurora Incentivized OER Adoption Pilot
In February 2020, CCA received funding from the Colorado Open Educational Resources Council and the Colorado Department of Higher Education to provide financial incentives to faculty and instructors to review, adopt, or adapt OER for use in their classes. Our goal with this funding is to lower student costs, increase student accessibility, and use course materials that more directly align with CCA's inclusive excellence goals. There are 3 funding opportunities for instructors and faculty. The deadline to apply is April 24, 2020.
What are OER?
Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching learning and research materials that are in the public domain or openly licensed to permit various uses. They can be used by our faculty and instructors to provide quality education without the excessive cost of textbooks or proprietary course materials. Funding Opportunities
1) OER Textbook Review - 28 awards for $250
Apply to review an OER Textbook on OTL
To support peer review within the OER community, 10 faculty and 18 instructors will be accepted for this project on a first-come basis. Successful applicants will review an OER textbook on the Open Textbook Library (OTL) using the complete OTL rubric.
Successful applicants for OER Textbook Review incentive are required to:
- Participate in a one-hour OER textbook review professional development training
- Review an OER title found on the Open Textbook Library
- Submit a link to a completed review, including all categories of the rubric
2) OER Textbook Adoption - 4 awards for $1,577
Apply for the OER Textbook Adoption incentive
Redesign a course using existing OER, open, or free resources. Examples could include adopting an open textbook without modifications and/or using licensed library resources such as videos, articles, or eBooks in place of a textbook.
Application Criteria
Successful applicants will be required to emphasize innovative educational practices in their use of OER. Selection preferences will be given to proposals affecting courses with high student enrollment, high materials cost, core courses, and guaranteed transfer pathways/general education courses. A team of instructors or faculty may submit one application together.
Successful applicants for the OER Textbook Adoption incentive are required to:
- Participate in a three-session OER Professional Development series
- Attend the Grant Project Kickoff meeting
- Create and submit course build document and syllabus with the guidance of an instructional designer,
- Identify and select OER that meets accepted accessibility standards
- Course must be taught in the Fall 2020 or Spring 2021 semester
- Submit a final report on the impacts of their course
3) OER Adaption/Curation - 1 award for $3,154
Apply for the OER Adaption/Curation incentive
Redesign a course by modifying or remixing openly licensed or public domain content. Examples could include compiling openly licensed resources into a book or rewriting and combining multiple sources with narratives you write in D2L.
Application Criteria
For either of these awards, successful applicants will be required to emphasize innovative educational practices in their use of OER. Selection preferences will be given to proposals affecting courses with high student enrollment, high materials cost, core courses, and guaranteed transfer pathways/general education courses. A team of instructors or faculty may submit one application together.

Eligibility Requirements
- All CCA faculty and instructors are invited to apply
- All applicants must have and/or obtain approval from the decision-making authority for proposed course material changes
- Instructors and faculty may apply for a textbook review as well as either a textbook adoption or an adaption/curation incentive.
- OER Adoption and OER Adaption/Curation applications must be for courses that are adopting OER for the first time.
- A team of instructors or faculty may submit one application together. If selected, a proposal with multiple team members must evenly split the award amount among all members.
Support for Course Redesign Project
The following support will be available for funding recipients:
- Library: for resource identification
- D2L: for questions regarding the course build
- Office of Disability and Equity: to support the use of accessible resources
- Instructional Design contractor: to provide up to 15 hours of support on course build documentation and final review of course build
Project Timeline
- April 24, 2020: Deadline for application submission
- May 1, 2020: Announcement of project selection
- May 30, 2020: Deadline for completion of OER Professional Development sessions 1 and/or 2
- By June 1, 2020: Grant Project Kickoff meeting and OER Professional Development session 3
- June 16, 2020: Deadline to meet with Instructional Designer to go over Course Build Document
- June 30, 2020: Awardees for course redesign projects receive first half of the stipend payment
- July 10, 2020: Awardees submit Course Build Document and Syllabus
- August 7, 2020: Deadline for submitting OTL Textbook Review
- August 14, 2020: Deadline for building the course
- Fall 2020 or Spring 2021: Teach course
- June 1, 2021: Deadline for final report submission
