The Community College of Aurora (CCA) is seeking enthusiastic professionals to join the Center for Workforce Development.  The Adult Basic Education (ABE)/High School Equivalency (HSE) Instructors are responsible for teaching all levels of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE), to prepare adult learners to increase their basic skills, pass High School Equivalency tests (such as GED) and become career and college ready. 

The successful candidate creates a classroom climate that encourages learning and possesses familiarity with issues facing diverse populations.  The characteristics crucial to success in the position include creative academic leadership skills, excellent communication skills, a sense of humor, and a strong appreciation for working in a collaborative, inclusive, diverse, and participative environment.   

Position Summary: The ABE/HSE Instructor is responsible for teaching all levels of Adult Basic Education (ABE) and Adult Secondary Education (ASE) to prepare adult learners to increase their basic skills, pass the HSE tests, and become career and college ready.  Instructors will need to be available to teach days and/or evenings on a part-time basis.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Instruct students in Adult Basic and Secondary Education including language arts, math, social studies, science and basic computer skills required for the HSE tests.
  • Assist in the assessment and placement of students into appropriate classes each semester.
  • Prepare lesson plans and instructional materials utilizing various instruction methods.
  • Collect and record student data outcome measures for instructional and grant-related purposes.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Abide by all CCA and Colorado Community College System policies and procedures.
  • Work with community partners and volunteer instructors in the classrooms.

 Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in education or related field.
  • Three years teaching experience with emphasis on adult education.
  • Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABEA) or willing to obtain within 2 years of hire date.
  • Documented knowledge of adult education theory, college transition and ABE/HSE programming.
  • Familiarity with standard adult education assessment tools, especially the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE).
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion in previous professional roles.
  • Ability to create an inclusive classroom environment conducive to students from multiple diverse identities.
  • Ability to make curriculum culturally relevant to diverse student populations. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in curriculum development 
  • Teaching experience in adult education
  • Experience in volunteer management

Salary: $26.00 per hour.  It is anticipated that the individual could work up to 12 hours per week, but hours may vary per 10 week session.

Position Specifics: This position is part-time.  There are no insurance benefits offered with this position.  However, other benefits associated with this position include, a pension plan through the Colorado Public Employees Retirement Association, eligibility to contribute to supplemental retirement plans.
