CCA A Finalist for AACC Advancing Diversity Award

The American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) has named the Community College of Aurora one of its finalists for a 2018 Award of Excellence.

CCA is one of five finalists in the category of Advancing Diversity along with Columbia State Community College in Tennessee; Lee College in Texas; Northeast Wisconsin Technical College; and Seminole State College of Florida.

The winners of the awards will be announced on April 30 at the AACC annual convention in Dallas, Texas.

The AACC Advancing Diversity Award recognizes colleges that have contributed significantly and over a sustained period of time to advancing diversity in community college leadership, the community, and within higher education as a whole.

Some of the criteria that colleges need to meet for the Advancing Diversity award are: sponsoring programs to promote diverse leaders and engage diverse student populations, modeling innovative and progressive practices to support institutional equity, and maintaining and advocating policies that support diversity.

CCA applied for the award in November 2017 as part of its ongoing commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. The college has developed an Inclusive Excellence Council and a Strategic Plan that details numerous ongoing and future initiatives.

Among these initiatives, the Inclusive Excellence Strategic Council has conducted a campus climate survey to assess employee morale as it relates to equity and other factors; created a campus champion training to equip CCA leadership with knowledge and strategies to develop a more inclusive campus; and developed partnerships with community, state, and local organizations.
