Community Colleges Future Assembly has selected Community College of Aurora’s Strengthening Working Families Initiative as one of 10 nominees for a 2018 Bellwether Award.

The Bellwether Awards recognize outstanding and innovative programs and practices that successfully lead community college programs into the future. CCA’s Strengthening Working Families Initiative (SWFI) program was nominated for a Bellwether Award within the Workforce Development category. Programs nominated in the Workforce Development category are recognized for public and/or private strategic alliances and partnerships that promote community and economic development.

The SWFI program at CCA helps parents access jobs in high demand industries such as healthcare, information technology, and advanced manufacturing, while helping those parents with childcare assistance. The program was launched at CCA in summer 2016 after the college received a $3.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Labor.

CCA staff will present the program to the Community College Futures Assembly in January 2018 and will compete against nine other programs in the Workforce Development Category.

The 2018 Bellwether Award Winners will be announced at the Closing Session and Bellwether Awards Luncheon on January 30. The Community Colleges Future Assembly is sponsored by the Institute of Higher Education at the University of Florida and focuses on cutting-edge, trendsetting programs that other colleges might find worthy of replicating.
