CCA to Host Ghostlight Project Event

Aurora, CO – Jan. 9, 2017 – The Community College of Aurora (CCA) will be a host site for the launch of the Ghostlight Project, a simultaneous gathering of members from the theater community from across the country on Thursday, January 19, 2017 at 5:30 p.m. to show their solidarity for the values of inclusion, participation, and compassion for everyone - regardless of race, class, religion, country of origin, immigration status, (dis)ability,  gender identity, or sexual orientation.

On January 19, 2017 at 5:30 p.m., CCA will join other members of the theater community - from Broadway to regional theaters to high schools and colleges and community theaters - as they gather in a collective, simultaneous action to create “light” for the challenging times ahead.

The event at CCA will include an illuminated welcome, a reprise of performances from the college’s Collective Heart Project, and an open forum discussion. The event will be held in the Fine Arts Building on the campus of the Community College of Aurora, 16000 E. CentreTech Parkway, Aurora, CO 80011.

“On the eve of the 2017 presidential inauguration we will gather in solidarity and light to welcome all, knowing they have a voice and a place within the CCA community and Theatre Department,” said Stacey D’Angelo, director of the CCA Theatre Department. “Just as the mission of the Ghostlight Project is to support inclusivity and participation for all people, we are doing the same here at our college.” D’Angelo is passionate about the work she and the department have done during her nine years with the college – for example, creating a forum for students from diverse backgrounds to share their stories through a variety of thought-provoking theatrical productions.

One production was “The Collective Heart Project,” performed prior to last year’s presidential election. D’Angelo placed “Truth Booths” at various locations around CCA to capture the thoughts of those willing to share about these issues. Inside the booths, which resembled a rustic voting booth, was an iPad where participants anonymously spoke their “truths” in response to poignant questions like: “What does the American flag represent to you?” or “What is the American Dream and whose dream is it?” The entire production was a success and continues to serve as a platform to show support for diversity, equity, and inclusion across all programs offered at the college.
