Colorado Mexican Consulate Partners with Community College of Aurora

07/25/2022

AURORA, CO. – For the fifth consecutive year, the Consulate General of Mexico in Denver, has reaffirmed its commitment to several Community College of Aurora (CCA) students. On July 19th, CCA President, Dr. Mordecai Ian Brownlee; CCA Foundation Executive Director,  John Wolfkill; CCA Executive Director of Strategic Communications and Alumni Engagement, Blair Lee; Dean of Academic Effectiveness, Ana Martin-Mejia; and CCA Foundation Impact & Advancement Coordinator, Jose Puente Puente met with Consul General Berenice Rendón-Talavera for a ceremonial check signing.

The Mexican Consulate of Denver awarded the Community College of Aurora and the CCA Foundation $6,000 in IME-Becas scholarship dollars. The award will be divided and disseminated to 8 Mexican or Mexican-origin students in the fall semester (each receiving $750). As a match to these dollars, the CCA Foundation will provide an additional $750 scholarship for the spring semester, rounding out each student award to $1,500 for the 2022 - 2023 academic year.

CCA’s President Dr. Mordecai Ian Brownlee says, “The Community College of Aurora is thankful for the leadership and support provided by Consul General Rendón-Talavera and the Mexican Consulate. These resources ensure that CCA carries on its steadfast commitment of being a proud federally designated Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and Minority Serving Institution (MSI).”

To achieve the appointment of a federally designated HSI, a college must have an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic students.
Consul General Berenice Rendón Talavera said, “These scholarship dollars will aid students studying at the Community College of Aurora, an institution that we know, firsthand, is committed to helping students achieve their dream of attending and graduating from college.”

John Wolfkill, CCA Foundation Executive Director, added, “Year after year the Mexican Consulate reaffirms its commitment to our Hispanic student population, and for that we are grateful. These scholarship dollars help students stay on the path to a college credential.”

The Mexican Consulate provides assistance with documentation for travel and immigration to Mexican nationals in Colorado, 13 counties in eastern Wyoming, and 23 counties in eastern Montana.
