Brandau, Sandoval-Lucero named to VP roles

AURORA, Colo. – Community College of Aurora President Dr. Betsy Oudenhoven announced Tuesday she has appointed Elena Sandoval-Lucero to the position of vice president of Student Affairs and Janet Brandau to the role of vice president of Academic Affairs, effective immediately.

Both Brandau and Sandoval-Lucero had been serving interim roles for several months. The two recently answered questions in a pair of open meetings and to Faculty Senate about their qualifications, demeanor, and competencies for the full-time position. The comments and feedback from those constituencies, along with the strong credentials of both candidates, resulted in the two women receiving direct appointments.

“I can assure you that Elena and Janet work well together and with their colleagues, and I feel that I have a thoughtful, experienced and committed team in place,” Oudenhoven said. “Best of all, every person in the senior administration is passionate about this institution, the work that we do, and the students and employees that we serve.”

Sandoval-Lucero possesses 25 years of higher-education experience, including work in retention, enrollment and academic positions. She will serve as the chief Student Affairs officer for the college, and as such is responsible for ensuring the division is adequately staffed and that the organizational structure is sufficient to effectively accomplish the college’s strategic goals.

Sandoval-Lucero also works with Student Affairs leadership to provide guidance, planning and assessment to the division, while ensuring compliance with system board policies and federal and state laws.

Brandau brings a solid background in undergraduate education, with a strong emphasis on assessment and administration experience. A former math teacher, Brandau was program director for testing services and assessment at Johnson County Community College in Overland Park, KS, for seven years before joining CCA in 2008. She since has served as an associate dean and associate vice president of Academic Affairs before being named interim vice president of Academic Affairs in July.

Brandau in her current role is responsible for administrative management and oversight of the academic programs, including Liberal Arts and Career and Technical programs; directly supervises three academic deans; oversees department budgeting; and directs academic processes including strategic planning, assessment and departmental review.
