Community College of Aurora, HealthONE Partner to Boost Entry-Level Healthcare Employment in Metro Denver

July 17 - The Community College of Aurora is partnering with HealthONE, the largest healthcare system in the metro Denver area, to create a 12-month apprenticeship program that will increase the number of entry-level healthcare workers in regional hospitals.

Through the partnership, students selected to participate in the apprentice program will be hired as a Patient Care Technician by HealthONE and alternate between attending classes at CCA and working in a HealthONE hospital for each week of the program.

At the end of the 21-week academic program, students will not only earn a Patient Care Technician certificate from CCA, but they will also learn on-the-job skills relevant to their career. After completing their academic coursework, participants will focus exclusively on their on-the-job learning component for the balance of the one-year apprenticeship program, and will then transition into a standard Patient Care Technician position with HealthONE. Students will also be eligible to take the State of Colorado Nurse’s Aide Certification exam.

“HealthONE, a part of HCA Healthcare, is excited to partner with the Community College of Aurora to help meet the growing demand for entry-level workers in the healthcare industry,” said Suzanne Kelley, HCA Healthcare’s Regional Vice President of Human Resources. “Apprentices will learn on-the-job skills and get real-world experience in the largest healthcare system in the metro Denver area. Apprentices will attend classes at CCA, work as a Patient Care Technician in one of six metro-area HealthONE hospitals, and eventually earn a Certified Nursing Assistant license.”

HealthONE has more than 10,000 employees – however, vacancy and turnover rates for entry-level healthcare workers are high. This apprenticeship program is expected to help HealthONE find and retain entry-level healthcare workers.

HealthONE will hold information sessions at five of its hospitals in August and shortly after will offer spots in the apprenticeship program to candidates. The first cohort of between 15 to 25 students will start in October.
