"The Art of Leo Tanguma"" Renowned artist to speak March 8 at CCA

Members of the community and potential students are invited to join Leo Tanguma, Colorado’s famous Chicano mural artist, at 5:30 p.m. on March 8 as he shares his work and discusses his upcoming mural painting class at the Community College of Aurora. The presentation will be held in Room 217, North Quad Building, Lowry Campus, 9202 E. Severn Place, Denver, CO 80230. The event is free and open to the public. The session is sponsored by the college’s Art & Design department.

Considered one of the best mural artists in the nation, Tanguma's work can be found in churches, prisons, and schools. Well known for his famous murals at Denver International Airport, Tanguma's artwork incorporates aspects of sculpture along with an unmistakable artistic style that addresses social, political, and race issues.

Tanguma has spent decades working with youth and other groups to create thought-provoking murals and paintings. “A key element found in my work is the struggle for human liberation and democracy,” he says. “This refers to dehumanizing conditions oppressed peoples strive to overcome such as poverty and homelessness in our cities, the destruction of the environment, racism and exploitation, or any unjust conditions.”

Tanguma will teach a mural painting class at CCA this summer that will complete a mural for display in the West Quad on the Lowry Campus. Come to the special session on March 8 to learn more about this unprecedented opportunity to work alongside and learn from an accomplished and renowned artist.
