Perlmutter Debuts Iwo Jima Veterans' Film Fri.
Arthur McFarlane, Harlem native and great-grandson of American civil rights-activist W.E.B. Du Bois, will speak to CCA students on Nov. 14. The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Philip Armitage of the University of Colorado Boulder will deliver the fall Sherlin Lecture at CCA on Friday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. He will present "The Search for Another Earth" in the Fine Arts Building Forum on the CentreTech Campus. The college's observatory will be open for free public viewing after the lecture, weather permitting.
The art exhibit "Poetic Synthesis" is now open at the Community College of Aurora's Lowry Campus Art Gallery, and the show runs through Nov. 17. The community is invited to experience this original exhibit, a unique collaboration among artists and writers.
Authors Carleen Brice and Dan Guenther, along with spoken word artists Suzy Q Smith and Bobby LeFebre, are among those who will present and perform at the Community College of Aurora on Oct. 20 on behalf of the National Day on Writing.
The Community College of Aurora will play an integral role in the Sept. 23 Operation Mountain Guardian Emergency Exercise when its Disaster Management Institute serves as the Master Exercise Control Center managing the entire, day-long multijurisdictional operation. This grand-scale exercise, funded by a Homeland Security grant, will take place at multiple locations throughout the metro and will involve thousands of participants.
A ribbon cutting and grand unveiling of the completion of the Lowry Expansion Initiative, Phase One, will be held for the community at 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 16. Numerous dignitaries will speak, and building tours will be available. This special event will showcase the dynamic new environment that has been created for students at the Lowry Campus over the summer.
The BNSF Foundation has awarded a grant of $3,000 to the Community College of Aurora Foundation to support the Community English as a Second Language (ESL) program at the college. The program serves nearly 1,800 adult community members each year.
The highly praised composition "The Harp of Brandiswhiere: Suite for Celtic Harp" will be performed for the community at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16 at CCA's CentreTech Campus. Boulder musician Beth A. Cole will play the harp and Wayne A. Gilbert, CCA faculty member and Denver poet, will read the legend between the musical pieces. The event is free and open to the public.
The Hollywood Reporter, a magazine that bills itself as "the definitive interpretive voice of the entertainment industry," has named The Colorado Film School at CCA as one of the top 25 film schools in the world alongside prestigious institutions such as the American Film Institute, University of Southern California, UCLA, Syracuse University, Columbia University, and the Beijing Film Academy.

Take Back the Night events slated for April 21
A series of events designed to advocate for the right of individuals to feel safe from violence will be held at CCA on April 21 and the public is invited to participate.
Two CCA students recognized with Rising Star awards for their contributions as student leaders have one thing in common: a desire to help others.
Dr. Jack O. Burns from the University of Colorado Boulder will deliver the spring Sherlin Lecture at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, April 18. The event is free and open to the public.
CCA students Matthew Downey and Joshua Harges have been named to the Phi Theta Kappa All-Colorado Academic Team and were recognized along with their peers at a special ceremony on March 9.
The college will host the annual 9Health Fair at its CentreTech Campus on Sunday, April 10, from 7 a.m. to 12 noon. The Fair offers free and low-cost health screenings for individuals aged 18 and older.
Aurora's new city manager paid a recent visit to Bobby Pace's state and local government class, and students peppered George "Skip" Noe with questions that were both academic and personal.
CCA students and members of the community are invited to Fulbright Scholar Jon Bendall's April 5 presentation on law enforcement practices and street gangs.

The Community College of Aurora Foundation has announced the establishment of the Phi Theta Kappa Scholarship, awarding $1,000 per semester, and eligible students are invited to apply.
Officials at the Community College of Aurora and the University of Colorado College of Nursing at the Anschutz Medical Campus have announced the creation of the Integrated Pathway to Baccalaureate Nursing Education Program to benefit students looking for a meaningful career as well as healthcare providers who seek to hire baccalaureate-prepared nurses with outstanding preparation for professional practice.
Judy Strathearn, adjunct instructor in English and literature, has been accepted to a summer NEH workshop on African-American history and culture.
In recognition of its commitment to providing public health services and information for students, as well as for members of the Aurora community, the college's Office of Student Life, managed by Angie Tiedeman and Julie Johnson, has been named "Public Health Hero" of the year.
Puja Kapoor, an Aurora resident and Smoky Hill grad, will spend May 20-22 at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Tex., as a National Community College Aerospace Scholar. She has also secured a coveted summer internship at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., where she will work with a team of research engineers.
A Community College of Aurora team earns the chance to present at a statewide science symposium, and beats out teams from four-year institutions by taking the grand prize.

Performing Arts Weekend events at CCA open to the community
The Community College of Aurora's spring Performing Arts Weekend will be held April 30-May 2, and a series of cultural events - performances, recitals, and exhibits - will be free and open to all.
In recognition of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the CCA Science Club will hold a community-wide Earth Day event at the Morrison Nature Center on April 24.
The record that was broken in 2009 was completely shattered this year: CCA volunteers in the Tax Help Colorado program have helped return more than $2.3 million in tax refunds to the Aurora community.

Military Wall of Honor dedication to be held Nov. 11
A Military Wall of Honor dedication will be held Nov. 11 at CCA, and all military branches will be recognized. U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter and other dignitaries will be on hand for this Veterans Day event, which is free and open to the public.
The college will celebrate the first National Day on Writing on Oct. 20 with a slate of events aimed at both students and the community. Performances by renowned spoken word artists will highlight the day's activities.

Holly Petraeus to make Oct. 13 visit to campus
Holly Petraeus, national director of BBB Military Line and wife of General David Petraeus, will be honored at an Oct. 13 reception at the Community College of Aurora.
