The Community College of Aurora will celebrate the first National Day on Writing with a slate of events aimed at both students and the community designed to draw attention to how integral writing is to daily life in the 21st century. To highlight the remarkable variety of writing we engage in and help make writers from all walks of life aware of their craft, the National Council of Teachers of English has established October 20, 2009, as the National Day on Writing. The U.S. Senate has passed a resolution declaring the date as the National Day on Writing.
All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is as follows:
8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Writing Gallery, wall of Student Centre Rotunda (open to all)
10-11 a.m. Workshop: Résumé Writing
11 a.m.-12 p.m. Poetry workshop: “From Be-bop to Six Gallery” with Rachel Ankney
12-1 p.m. Performance by spoken-word poets Suzi q and Bobby Lefebre
1:15-1:45 p.m. Workshop: How to Write a Good Scholarship Essay
2-4 p.m. Open Mic Poetry Readings
Additionally, if weather permits, participants will be encouraged to engage in sidewalk writing and man-on-the-street interviews at the college from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
