The CCA Social Science Department is hosting Dr. Paul Ortiz to speak in honor of Black History Month on February 17th from 1 to 2 p.m.
Paul Ortiz is the author of "A Black and Latinx History of the United States" where he fundamentally contests conventional views of United States history by injecting an intersectional history of African-Americans and Latinx voices into the prevailing and dominant historical narrative. As told from the book description:
Scholar and activist Paul Ortiz challenges the notion of westward progress as exalted by widely taught formulations… [by] placing African American, Latinx, and Indigenous voices unapologetically front and center… Incisive and timely, this bottom-up history, told from the interconnected vantage points of Latinx and African Americans, reveals the radically different ways that people of the diaspora have addressed issues still plaguing the United States today, and it offers a way forward in the continued struggle for universal civil rights
Dr. Ortiz will be building off the ideas and conclusions presented in this book during his talk.
