Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes. An elementary definition of matter is anything you can see, feel, taste, touch, or hear. This means that chemistry is the study of everything around you, and how it interacts with you and everything else - pretty all encompassing. Chemistry also serves as the foundation for study in all scientific disciplines. Regardless of which scientific field you are interested in, every single substance you will discuss or work with is made up of chemical compounds. All processes important to scientific study will be based on knowledge of chemistry. For example, the metabolic processes taking place in your body as you read this are all a series of chemical reactions. Consequently, this basic knowledge is essential for the study of biology, physics, geology, as well as all of the health sciences. In your studies, you will also notice how chemistry frequently touches your daily life, everything from the fireworks you enjoy on the fourth of July to the new antibiotic you take to stay healthy.

The Community College of Aurora (CCA) provides a variety of chemistry courses to prepare students for future study. Introduction to Chemistry (CHE 101) is designed for non-majors and students who have not had any previous classroom experience in chemistry. General College Chemistry I and II (CHE 111 and CHE 112) is a two-semester series designed for science majors and many of the health sciences. The two classes prepare students in all the foundational topics they will need for further study. Organic Chemistry I and II (CHE 211 and CHE 212) exposes students to the structure and physical and chemical behavior or organic molecules, which includes everything from environmental toxins to pharmaceuticals.

Program Level Outcomes (PLOs)

Statements which articulate, in measurable terms, what students should know and be able to demonstrate as a result of and at the conclusion of a program. PLOs communicate program goals explicitly and foster transfer of responsibility for learning from faculty to students.

A student who obtains an AS degree in Chemistry from the Community College of Aurora will demonstrate the following abilities:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of chemical vocabulary, chemical principles, and key concepts in the chemistry discipline, apply this vocabulary, and these principles and key concepts to interpret new information and situations.
  • Identify, integrate, and analyze information or data to formulate and defend scientific predictions and conclusions within the chemistry discipline.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of experimental design and methodology within the chemistry discipline.
  • Communicate chemical information clearly and logically.
  • Use mathematical methods, reasoning and strategies to investigate and solve problems within the chemistry discipline.
  • Describe examples of the impact of chemistry on society, and apply scientific information to decision making.
