Title V

Title V Grant

The Community College of Aurora was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) in 2016. To receive this designation, institutions must have an undergraduate Hispanic full-time equivalent student enrollment of 25 percent or more. At CCA, more than 30 percent of the student population identifies as Latinx, and about 1 in 16 students who graduate are Latinx students.

With this designation, CCA applied to a Title V Grant which is a federal grant that gives funds to institutions who are HSI, over the course of 5 years to meet certain objectives and goals. The objectives that CCA identified in its Title V grant are below.

Grant Objectives

Objective 1: Culturally-responsive pedagogy practices and curriculum refinements in targeted Associate of Science (A.S.) and Associate of Arts (A.A.) courses.

  • Practices and refinements will include elements such as democratizing the curriculum, where, for example, students determine the assignments and deadlines are negotiated and voted on by the class; the creation of identity-based writing assignments to increase student awareness of privilege and social justice, and facilitate deeper and more critical thinking; and exercises that contextualize concepts to real-world applications. Targeted courses over the course of the grant cycle are: English 121, English 122, Biology 111, Biology 201 and Chemistry 101.

Objective 2: Guided Pathways Communities with embedded Learning Communities for students in targeted A.S. and A.A. degree pathways.

  • Asegurando Learning Communities will engage students over two semesters in: 1) co-enrollment in a targeted set of courses, 2) group supplemental academic instruction for co-enrolled courses, and 3) enrollment in a one-credit first-year experience course.

Objective 3:  Data-informed culture and practices.

  • More streamlined access to data analysis and reporting will be facilitated through the purchase and implementation of Qualtrics research software, including set-up of customized indicator and outcome dashboards and staff training on how to modify and create new reports.
